Sherman is another little residential town tucked away in the western
hills of Connecticut, marked by heavily wooded mountains spilling
down to broad waterscape of the 23 mile long Lake
Candlewood in its eastern boundary.
The
Sherman Historical Society chronicles the formation of the manmade
lake, which was an engineering feat because the valley which lies
beneath it, where residences and a local school were located, was
the first in the United States to be flooded for hydro-electric
power.
The Sherman Senior Center, built in 1886, is next door to the Sherman
Historical Society. The Sherman Hardware Store was originally a
jail/police station and then a general store. The Sherman Scout
House was used as a plane-spotting tower in World War II, and was
a single-room schoolhouse in its early day.
The town’s Old Store Museum also reflects its history as an agrarian
community. The Sherman
Playhouse has been in Sherman fora long time. A local theater
group called the Sherman Players has called the town home for decades,
and the playhouse is but one of the establishments important to
the town.
Sherman
Park and Recreation maintains a track, a boating area with 49
docks, and a walking trail that is approximately two miles long.
The Veterans Field is an active place because it has soccer and
softball fields, a basketball court, tennis courts, a picnic area,
and a playground. Veterans Field is located behind the Sherman School
on Saw Mill Road. The town beach is further south on Saw Mill Road.
The nature trail begins at the town beach and continues across the
street and ends behind the playground. Park and Recreation also
offers senior summer camp and junior summer camp.
The Congregational Church offers services and youth centered programs.
The Jewish Community Center is a meeting center and a brand new
building has just been opened. The Holy Trinity Church is located
next to Colonial Field.
Sherman educated its youth through 8th grade at the Sherman
School, and its students may then receive a voucher to attend
a school of their choice New
Miflord High School, New
Fairfield High School.
